On a girl weekend recently my sister introduced me and my mum to Amigurumi, say what? I have not crocheted in many years and my abilities are about the level of a scarf a very long wonky scarf. My mother is the master of crochet and I love to watch her sitting quietly and creating something hand-made. My patient sister walked us through the steps and taught us how to make a magic circle. Perfect for starting the head of these crazy little critters. I know, I know it is not going to help me get those books finished, but to crotchet is to relax. An enjoyable hobby I had forgotten about and sometimes we need to goof off from our work. The girl weekend was gorgeous, filled with chatter, cups of hot tea, mounds of easter chocolate and many laughs.
Precious time just being together is a rare event these days in a busy world full of appointments and over worked schedules . Our daughters played together, they also sat and completed some chaining. Pass the hobbies down I say.
With my WIP’s, I take a moment to step back, it helps me see the things I need to correct or change. Doing something light and easy, with no thinking, just cruising with my crotchet hook is a lovely way to leave everything behind. Maybe not as good as a walk to the beach, but hey its getting cold and an indoor hobby is a tad more favourable. What do I do with all my little critters? I give them away as gifts. I enjoy that pleasure too. My daughters school will be full of them come this winter. The colour of their choice, have you ever met a yellow penguin?
We all need a hobby, something that takes us out of the zone, funny, my other hobbies are turning into my life’s work. Maybe that is how things should be, you find something you love doing and make it into a business. Crocheting will always take me back, a little girl sitting beside my patient mother, teaching me to chain. I enjoy teaching my daughter too.
Check out Millie on her world I adore her work and she has an amazing talent when it comes to crocheting anything. I love her blog.
This Mothers day I gave thanks for time spent with my beautiful mother and family. We sat together in the sun room making these little guys and laughing at how each one had its own personality. A picnic at our favourite spot. Ocean views, picnic lunch, a hot cup of tea and cup cakes for the children. It was simple, but wonderful, especially the warm sun on our backs and watching the kids play. I hope your Mothers Day is or was special too.
What hobby has taken you away from your work or have you been lucky enough to make it into your life’s work?
