A FUN IDEA
One fine autumn morning my eldest came to the breakfast table with a problem. She had to write a short story for a competition at school. My eyes lit up, my head started whirling and clicking as a cloud of imaginings hovered above.
“Mum I’m not allowed to have any help.” She said. She was one step ahead of me, stopping my mouth from opening and spilling a multitude of story possibilities her way. She went on to say she loved writing too, but finding the idea for a story was the hardest decision.
I thought about that and looked across the table grabbing a book I handed it to her. Not a book on inspirational story ideas, no, I handed her the latest edition of Ripley’s Believe it or Not. She looked at me like I was nuts.
“You can make a story from anything.” I said. She flicked through the book and laughed, “some pretty crazy characters in here.” She added. “Prove it.”
Prove it, make a story out of um lets see, she closed the book and turned to face the cork board on our kitchen wall, her hand landed on the words waste disposal voucher………”This one mum.”
“Waste disposal voucher? TOO EASY!” I said.
I imagined a picture book with a small boy opening his birthday presents he had left the best until last. His grandmothers gift. It was and envelope but that did not faze him his gran was cool and never, ever gave him a lame present. When he opened it he found a voucher for waste disposal and his day ruined. Gran smiled and asked him to look out the window. There in the paddock was a giant elephant. She told him he was going to need the waste disposal unit with a pet like that.
She laughed. “Not bad Mum.” She left the room with a sparkle in her eye I knew I had inspired her for the day and I could see an idea bubbling above her head.
I then thought about writing prompts, at my writing group I love listening to the different stories from the one writing prompt.
A fun idea popped into my head.
I am never short of ideas for stories but the ones I want to get published I can hardly share here in fine detail, I still need to practice…..flex those writing muscles as it were. I recall reading somewhere a few years back, that I needed to stop reading books about how to write and start writing, it is the only way to perfect the craft.
Here’s where YOU fit in…
In the comments leave one writing prompt, maybe title of book or first sentence, something creative. Give me one character name (animal, human, anything) because it will be a draft for a picture book. Bear in mind my daughter is going to pick the one she likes. Keep it rated G folks I might try to get an image sketched to go with it.
I’m waiting, prompt me punk…..I dare you…… leave your prompt and next week maybe yours will be the one my daughter chooses for me.
I will post it next week.
Thanks for reading……..this should be fun, have a great week everyone.
